Eat Italian Cold Cuts, Stay Healthy

All-Italian study confirms that moderate consumption of luncheon meats does not increase the risk of colon-rectum cancers.

Moderate consumption of luncheon meats does not increase the risk of colon-rectum cancers, one of the types of cancer most linked to diet, according to a recent study coordinated by the University of Milan and conducted between 1985 and 2010 on over 10 thousand subjects. The study was published in the scientific publication Nutrition and Cancer and presented at TuttoFood 2017. The results suggests no association between the current consumption of cold cuts by the general Italian population and colon-rectum tumours. This is due to the fact Italian luncheon meats generally contain higher quality and better nutritional values than the mass-market products widely sold in Northern Europe or America. Furthermore, Italian consumption is generally more limited and, first and foremost, cold cuts are part of the Mediterranean diet, which features more healthy food than any other diet, i.e. more fruit and vegetables, olive oil and whole-grain cereals.
