The World-Renowned Verdicchio Wine

The Marche landscape is all about the vineyards and the wines are countless. However, it is Verdicchio that really stands out in the world’s white wine scene, especially Verdicchio Matellica and Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi.

The popularity of Verdicchio is partly due to its peculiar bottle, shaped as an amphora, an ancient Greek-Roman jug. It is obtained from the eponymous indigenous white grapes, which retain their distinctive green shades upon ripening – verdicchio roughly translates into “greenish”. It is an extremely versatile grape used to produce wines of superior quality, whose main characteristics are its freshness, elegance and complex aromatic profile, with a strong, almond finish. Verdicchio wine ages gracefully, thanks to its good structure and adequate alcohol content.

Verdicchio of Matelica
Verdicchio is produced in two main areas: Matelica and Castelli di Jesi, in the valley of River Esino. They differ from one another in terms of quantity, characteristics of the soil and climate. Verdicchio of Matelica DOC is produce with 85% of Verdicchio grapes. Its organoleptic properties are the expression of the peculiar characteristics of the territory, such as the daily temperature range which allow grapes to retain a high level of acidity. Verdicchio of Matelica comes in different types, namely dry, sparkling, reserve and passito. Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva, which was awarded a Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) in 2009, requires aging for at least 25 months.

Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi
Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi ranks first by quantity, personality and versatility. It can be enjoyed fresh as soon as the spring following the harvest, but it needs time to age in order for it to acquire a more complex structure, softness and balance. It is produced mainly in the still type, although it is also available in the sparkling type (Charmat and Champenoise method) as well as Classico, Riserva docg, Classico Riserva docg, Classico Superiore and Passito. Made with Verdicchio grapes, Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi can also contain Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Toscana grapes in quantities not superior to 15%. Its colour is hay-yellow, with shades of green upon pressing, which turn to gold as it ages. It has a persistent, fruity and flowery smell, with notes of bitter almonds. Its taste is dry, fresh and soft, with nuances of peach and almond. It is perfectly suitable to complement a full-course meal. New wine needs to be served in flutes at 6-8°C, whereas aged Verdicchio is best enjoyed in tulip-shaped glasses at 8-10°C. Regardless of the type and the ageing, Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi is one of the most popular white wines in the world.
